Puente Alto: The Privileged 100 Points Terroir

The team at Savour BlackBookAsia Magazine is enstatic to announced that Don Melchor Vintage 2020 and Marques de Casa Concha Heritage 2020 have both been short-listed to be in the running for our Wine of the Year 2022, which will be featured during our annual awards. The Chilean region’s sublime climate conditions and soil composition births these two ultra-premium wines and this article will tell you all about it.

From the prestigious Puente Alto region come the prized wines of Viña Don Melchor and Viña Concha Y Toro wines, notably the newest Don Melchor 2020, the 34th vintage and Marques de Casa Concha Heritage 2020, the first vintage. Rooted in the philosophy of making a wine that truly expresses its terroir, Don Melchor has been making waves with wines that arguably eclipse that of the Old World: ripe with complex earthy aromas and flavours of dried red fruits, cedar and spice.

In Chile, the terroir of Puente Alto propels Don Melchor’s acclaim as a premiere winemaker in the New World of wines. Boasting a rich history and legacy that began in the 1880s and achieving several milestones, including attaining 100 points from US-critic James Suckling , the critically-acclaimed terroir hits all the right notes for the most exquisite wines of the region to develop.

Due to its lush expression and top quality ingredients and notes, the wines moulded by the Andes climate in the Puente Alto region have gained an increased global recognition — from the iconic 1988 harvest that was listed among the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of the Year to the newest Don Melchor Vintage 2020 and Marques de Casa Concha Heritage 2020, the wines of the Puente Alto region have led the recognition of the improving quality of Chile’s fine wines over the past three years, showing tremendous potential for investment opportunities.

Distilling the Cabernet Sauvignon of the Andes: Set at the foothills of the majestic Andes Mountains in Maipo Valley, Chile, Viña Don Melchor sits 650 metres above sea level, atop the oldest and most complex northern terrace of the Maipo River. Each night, temperatures dip to a cold seven degrees Celsius as a coastal sea breeze wafts and settles across the valley, creating the perfect condition for grapes to ripen slower and more evenly. Amidst the arid Mediterranean climate, red wine grapes flourish, plump with seductive flavours and aromas.

The rising and falling of glaciers over thousands of years have led to soil erosion from the mountains to the valleys, creating Puento Alto’s unique composition of clay, silt, sand and larger rounded stones. The terroir’s granitic and volcanic soils merge with the Andes climate, allowing the grapes to reach the perfect maturation for harvesting.

From the terroir of Puento Alto springs forth two unmatched blends starring Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes: Don Melchor Vintage 2020 and Marques de Casa Concha Heritage Vintage 2020. Don Melchor Vintage 2020, curated by Enrique Tirado, CEO and technical director of Don Melchor, brims with the flavour of luscious red fruits and notes of violets and roses. Elegant and balanced, the violet-hued wine exudes the best expression of the Cabernet Sauvignon that titillates with a smooth, velvety texture, lush body and long and persistent finish.

Stay tuned for Savour BlackBookAsia Magazine’s Annual Awards where both Don Melchor Vintage 2020 and Marques de Casa Concha Heritage Vintage 2020 have been short listed for our prestigious Wine of the Year 2022.
