At first glance it looks like a typical teppanyaki restaurant but once you take a look at the menu and your mouth get a taste of the dishes, one will realised that every course has some exciting influence from various cuisines around the globe. The folks behind The Straits Teppanyaki combine these flavours and mix it up with our own rich culture of cooking in Singapore. Reservations are highly advised as they have a popular following with each table having three or even four turnovers during our tasting at The Straits Teppanyaki.
We begin with the mocktails that range from the traditional Mojito with refreshing lime juice, soda, syrup and mint leaves to Kiwi Sour, an innovative concoction of kiwi syrup, lime juice, soda and minced ginger. All served without alcohol. So this is one place where you can drink and drive as there are no alcoholic drinks served here. We particularly enjoyed the Kiwi Sour with bites of ginger that not only look and taste great but is good for your health as well. A drink that most definitely deserves a second order or even third.
The best seats in the house is actually by the teppanyaki counter where you can get up close and personal with the chefs doing what they do best. For starters, Ham And Cheese Croquettes reminds us of our trip to Spain reviewing various restaurants in that amazing country. The only difference is that there is no pork in this dish, golden brown on the outside complete with beautiful edible flowers on top of each and every piece. The tantalising Truffle Gnocchi transport diners to Italy, soft and tender mini lumps of dough with generous amounts of black truffle and cheese, so good as if its from an authentic Italian restaurant.
Four types of sauces Sambal Kitchap, Spicy Teriyaki, Belado and Truffle Brown are highly recommended to go with your Beef Striploin that is well cooked on a bed of bean sprouts and hot plate that keeps your meat warm while eating. The Sambal Kitchap and Belado are loved by many people in Singapore and neighbouring countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia whereas the Truffle Brown sauce is an elevated take on the western recipe and the Spicy Teriyaki has an added punch to the regular Japanese version.
