Sugar(ed), the first and only professional body-sugaring (hair removal) studio in Singapore has claimed a sweet spot in the vibrant yet cosy River Valley neighbourhood. Its central location, in proximity to Robertson Quay and nearby Fort Canning Park, is around the corner from Orchard Road and a short drive away from downtown Singapore. The new studio takes over as the brand’s headquarters after the recent closure of its Keong Saik Road space, which operated for over four years.
In addition to being the brand’s new headquarters, this studio is also equipped for training purposes where two of its treatment rooms are interchangeably utilised for training. Founder Jasmine Yong, 37, a certified practitioner and educator in sugaring, personally trains each one of her 17 sugarists. They undergo a vigorous 12-week training period to master the patented sugaring technique in the lead-up to their certification. This equips them with the knowledge and means to assure the best service. As a former flight stewardess with Singapore Airlines, Jasmine believes in delivering at the highest standard of service, which has become synonymous with the Sugar(ed) brand.
Starting out as a home-based business following a detour on its initial business plan, Sugar(ed) has come a long way today with four studios across Singapore. Its studios are located at Bukit Timah, Katong, Upper Thomson and River Valley. Launched in August 2016, its first brick-and-mortar studio at Bukit Timah will be unveiling a fresh look in November this year. Sugar(ed) has gained a massive following over the years and has grown from a team of four to over 30 today.
Two members of Savour BlackBookAsia Magazine tried sugaring for the first time and both can feel Jasmine’s passion for spreading the word on sugaring and educating customers on the numerous benefits of this ancient method of hair removal. “Sugaring is less painful, it exfoliates dead skin cells, results in finer regrowth, less breakage and fewer ingrown hairs as hair is removed in the natural direction of growth. There is no risk of scalding (sugar paste is heated to body temperature) and it is more sustainable with little wastage as compared to waxing,” Jasmine shares and we agree!
With Sugar(ed), Jasmine takes a green approach to skincare and places strong emphasis on educating clients on the benefits of sugaring and on ultimately adopting a more natural lifestyle. In line with her ethos on education, Jasmine and her team embarked on a mission to de-stigmatise intimate care by utilising their platform to create a space for both women and men to be comfortable expressing themselves and asking questions about. Sugaring is a method of epilation that has been used since 1900 BC. It was created as the ultimate hair removal technique at a time when a hairless, totally smooth body was considered to be not only healthy and clean but also the standard of youth, beauty and innocence in Egypt. Sugaring was an indulgent, pampering treatment and a social activity for young Egyptians. This ancient hair removal remedy is truly one of the oldest forms of hair removal. Considered an art and a social activity, the earliest references came from the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia, Egypt and Greece.
