A reference in Bangkok’s entertainment scene for more than twenty years, Spasso not only is the place-to-be for a smart-casual night out with live music, but also one of the best Italian restaurant in the city. Located in the basement of Grand Hyatt Erawan, it has managed to ride out the years and the capital’s exceptional development in the domain of gastronomy and entertainment. This is a reason on its own to check the place out.
As you step in the decidedly Italian establishment, the sophistication accentuated by the flanked black marble walls here and there, you are welcomed by the friendly and dedicated staff. They will accompany you through the choices available for the day: Italian lunch buffet – replaced by the brunch buffet on Sundays – or à la carte menu.
Chef Roberto Parentela offers a plethora of options with antipasti, home-made burrata, soups, an array of main courses and an abundance of desserts. The Carpaccio di Manzo consisting of sliced raw beef accompanied with crunchy Piedmont nuts, sour wild rocket, parmesan cheese and Chiodini mushrooms. The slices were of the exact thinness you need to appreciate the meat’s juiciness, and the flavour intense enough to coat the nuts and mushrooms with a one of a kind aroma.
When it comes to your pasta, you can either go for an already set-up recipe or get to create your own mix of pasta and sauce. Even though the handmade pasta are so delicious there is no need for extravagant sauce to enjoy them, opt for the Pappardelle al Ragu’ di Agnello. A must-try for the epicurean in you, is the wood-fired Ricotta cheese, also home-made with the Chef’s expert knowledge of the craftsmanship required in cheese making. The Burrata is another one not to miss while eating at Spasso.
Pappardelle is a type of long and large pasta traditionally cooked with heavy sauces, as their wide, ribbony surface allows to maximise the amount of sauce that is caught on them. It is delightful with a ragout. Adding on to it a braised lamb cooked to perfection with a little bit of grated Pecorino cheese, and it leaves you wishing for more.
There is no worthy trip to an Italian restaurant without tasting the world-famous, UNESCO Heritage Napoletana pizzas. Here at Spasso, highly recommend is the Diavola pizza, covered in mozzarella cheese, a few refreshing basil leaves and Nduja salami, a spicy spreadable salami from Calabria mixed with spices and roasted pepper. Cooked in the wood-fire oven, the pizza comes out piping hot with a crispy dough. Each bite is a delight, the spicy salami paste is balanced out by the basil and tomato sauce to create the perfect harmony in your mouth.
To finish, the Bonet dessert is a simple back-to-childhood sweetness. Pairing an velvety chocolate mousse with a traditional amaretti biscuit, caramelised banana and vanilla ice-cream, it is a scrumptious delicacy. And if you feel gourmand enough, a suggestion is to try the Sicilian specialty: Seada. It is customarily enjoyed as a savoury dish made of salty sheep milk cheese but makes a fabulous dessert as well.
There is a large selection of beverages, from cocktails to spirits, wines and beers to accompany you during dinner or along the night if you wish to stay after 11pm when the place transforms in a club. Italian Buffet Lunch: THB 895+ Sunday Brunch: THB 1,400+. Do note that certain dishes described above are only available on the a la carte menu at additional charges apart from the lunch or brunch selection.
