Located just 10 minutes away from the airport and a 5-minute walk to Nai Yang Beach, The Slate gives guests an escape into a world of industrial beauty with a blend of lush, natural greenery.
Opened in 2007, The Slate was renowned designer Bill Bensley’s first foray into Hotel design. Inspired by the historic and successful tin mining industry of Phuket, the resort features a theme of natural untreated stone and steel elements carried beautifully across the entire property. Stepping into the property, you are immediately captivated by the unique colours, materials and lighting used, from the strikingly red heliconia flowers glowing elegantly on all sides of the concierge to the rugged tools of the tin mining past plastered on the coffee tables nearby. At night, the lobby takes on another light with a cool blue underglow that contrasts the dark coloured furnishings.
The Slate has numerous facilities across its large property perfect for the whole family. There are 3 swimming pools in the resort with the main pool catering to families with children and everything in between. Pool number 2 are for guests above the age of 16 years old and features a pool bar that you can swim up to order refreshing drinks and cocktails amidst the Phuket heat, while listening to fresh beats played through the sound system. The 3rd pool is open for guests above the age of 14 years old and is a quiet infinity pool overlooking the gardens and pond. For guests looking for sports and adrenaline, the resort’s experience centre gives guests an opportunity to try different sports and activities from archery to stand up paddling boarding to cycling. Guests may also sign up to learn the “art of eight limbs”, muay thai at the resort’s earth and steel toned gym.
The property’s 211 rooms and 7 suites provide for a large variety of room styles and configurations, from the cozy Pearl Bed Suites to the extremely popular and spacious Private Pool Villas which go up to a commodious 1050 square metres. Each of the rooms feature the harmonious blend of stone, natural metals and wood to create the unique style synonymous with the property. The pearl bed suites feature polished wooden floors, handcrafted rugs as well as paintings that fit perfectly into the dreamy room. The aroma of Champaca flowers flow from the room’s scented oil burner as well as shower gels and shampoos, a sweet and pleasant addition to the experience. Out on the balcony, guests can lounge on the cushy sofas while being cooled by the room’s Punkah Wallah fans that line that ceiling. There is also an outdoor charcoal black bathtub for guests to enjoy while lounging under the fan’s breeze.
The fine hospitality at The Slate continues in its many food & beverage concepts all over the resort. Tin Mine is the resort’s main restaurant just a staircase down from the lobby, serving the resort’s buffet breakfast spread which includes fresh fruits, pastries, bread as well as a crepes station allowing you to choose your fix ins such as chocolate sauce, cinnamon sugar and pandan custard. One of the restaurants not to missed is Black Ginger which is sat in the middle of a serene lake closed off by tree cover. Guests can enjoy a simple wooden boat ride across the lake to the restaurant while being greeted by the hosts. The restaurant serves homely Thai cuisine with both Northern Southern Thai classics available on the menu. We were served a tasting portion of their popular dishes, and not to be missed is the Tod Mun Goong, a fried shrimp cake with very fresh prawns which gave a nice hearty crunch when bitten into and paired beautifully with their signature sweet chilli-cucumber sauce.
Another dish that was well enjoyed was the Yum Kang, a poached rock lobster salad served with fresh herbs. The lobster was once again very fresh and was complemented very well by the freshness of the mint leaves as well as the savoury flavours of the fish sauce and chili. Decorated in the dark interiors with blue accents that the property is popular for, Rivet & Rebar is the restaurant’s Japanese restaurant and bar, located along the top of their lush green coliseum lawn. One of the star dishes at the restaurant is the Signature Sashimi Mori, an assortment of fresh imported fish which that evening included Hamachi, Hokkaido Scallop, Salmon, Tuna, and Andaman Moon Fish. The Hamachi was particularly enjoyed with a delectably fatty and tender mouthfeel. Another dish that highlighted the high level of Japanese cuisine at the restaurant was the Wagyu Steak, with either 100g or 150g of high quality wagyu beef cooked right on the table using a volcanic hot rock. Although the beef was delicious and well marbled on its own, a sprinkle of sea salt or the Japanese dipping sauce served alongside gave it a deep depth of flavor.
The Slate houses an in-resort spa called The Coqoon Spa, designed with the same intentions and luxurious style apparent throughout the rest of the resort. With the elegant curves of the rattan-made interiors and nature inspired décor, the spa aims to give guests rejuvenation in a peaceful environment. Following a health assessment at the beginning of the “Coqoon Rebirth” treatment, you are given a choice of 7 different massage oils, namely Eucalyptus, Champaka, Sesame, Lemongrass, Coconut Sun-Oil, Bergamot and peppermint, serving different purposes such as detoxification and calming. One of the signature experiences at The Slate is a treatment at the spa’s coqoon treatment room, a truly unique and almost fantastical round treatment room, 2 stories above the ground within the trees. Each of the 2 coqoons serve as a changing room & shower and a treatment room respectively, with a bridge connecting the coqoons. Inside the treatment room, a beautiful ambience is created by the warm fluorescent lightbulbs and tree like structures that line the high ceilings of the coqoon.
