Malis Phnom Penh, Cambodia

A perfect marriage of past & present Khmer cuisine served on a plate.

Undeniably the most reputable restaurant in Phnom Penh city, Malis sets a high benchmark in the gastronomy scene which others find hard to beat. Helmed by the only Master chef of Cambodia, Chef Luu Meng, the establishment sets beautifully in a tranquil courtyard with flowing fish pond, greeneries & intricate architecture. Malis is ambitious yet stays grounded to the Cambodian heritage, aiming to revive the evanescing Khmer cuisine and safeguard all that remains. Malis has preceded its competition and being nominated in multiple occasions for being one of Phnom Penh’s prime dining locale.

First look at the menu, one may be overwhelmed by the plethora of dishes available. The friendly team is extremely experienced and helpful to pick you something to accommodate your tastebud. Starting the dinner right with the scrumptious Takeo Sausages, made fresh with pork flavored with Malis spices and fine coconut shavings, served with a sweet chili sauce. Local sausages are such a huge part of Khmer food and Malis’ version is definitely one of the best, if not the best.

Another interesting starter is Pork and Banana Blossom Salad. This particular salad is topped with succulent slices of Takeo pork farmed in the province and tangy green papaya. The pork is well-marinated and slightly charred, savory and naturally sweet which compliments the earthy taste of banana blossom and refreshing shredded green papaya. For the soup that warms the body and soul, Malis’ Moringa deemed to be the best choice. Fresh leaves from the Moringa tree is well-known for its abundance of nutritional values and traditionally used for medicinal purposes.

Stealing the show, a must-try for all traveling to Cambodia, Fish Amok is a staple dish in Khmer culture and have been said to pass down since 2000 years ago. The fresh fish fillet is steamed in banana leaves with coconut milk and seasoned with Kroeung spices. Malis’ execution of Amok is nothing short of spectacular and goes flawlessly with locally harvest rice. Sharing the same recipe with Malis Siam Reap, Hidden Chreav Duck is just divine to devour. Originated from Siem Reap, the duck is marinated in lemongrass and slow roasted to perfection. The duck dish is also paired with seasoned brown rice and pickled chili to elevate the flavor.

Malis offers a wide variety of wines but SavourblackbookAsia strongly recommends the cocktails. The cocktails are made to order using fresh tropical fruits, goes impeccably with all the dainty dishes on the menu. Malis is an obvious choice for locals and tourists alike. The venue also serves as the perfect event space complete with amazing food & beverage offerings that makes your experience whole.
