Made With Passion – Straits Preserves

We at Savour BlackBookAsia Magazine have always and will continue to support our local talents. On this note, we are most pleased to present you with Straits Preserves founded by Sharon Lee. With the festive season just around the corner, Straits Preserves gift sets are perfect presents for both personal and corporate gifting. Tropical Island Gift Set, Good Day Combination Gift Set, Good Evening Combination Gift Set are highly recommended by the team at Savour BlackBookAsia Magazine after personally tasting each item. We first tasted the various marmalade and peaconut butter just as it is, then with freshly baked bread and finally toasted bread. We even tried it on plain crackers and concluded that the versatile spreads goes well with all of them.

Drawing inspiration from the abundance of tiny ripe calamansi limes in Sharon’s garden to create her first marmalade recipe, which after many refinements went on to win The World’s Best International Marmalade Award 2012 in The World’s Original Marmalade Awards in the U.K. to much praise the world over. The marmalades are also sold individually in beautifully designed boxes. All of them has their own unique selling points, we particularly like Singapore Sling that consist of a beautiful mix of fruits like pineapple, lime, lemon, orange and natural cherry flavour liken to the cocktail created by Raffles Hotel Singapore where each glass has a cherry as garnish on the rim. The Pineapple Tart is simply delectable not only during Chinese New Year but all year round. Created by the Peranakans or also known as Straits Born Chinese, possibly in the Katong district of Singapore where they called home during the early days of Singapore. Editor In Chief, Gabriel Tan recalls the area fondly, especially of Katong Bakery where his church Bethesda Katong used to get their communion bread in the golden days of old.

The unexpected early success inspired Sharon to make more marmalade using local ingredients leading to the birthed of Straits Preserves in 2014, which has been winning awards and many fans over the years with not only the jams but also her Peaconut Butter. An innovative take on traditional peanut butter combined with the superfruit coconut and sea salt. We enjoy the crunch of fine coconut bits that gives additional texture with every mouthful. Suitable for vegans and vegetarians, the Peaconut Butter also comes in other variations such as gula melaka by itself (another favourite ingredient that is a must have in every true blue Peranakan kitchen) or together with coffee and cocoa.
