Located within the Tonowasa spa area encircled by the lush mountain ranges of Hakone, Hakone Fukuzumiro is an exclusive 17-room Japanese Ryokan and spa which features traditional tatami-style rooms and omakase meals. Opened in 1890, the property has relied on its historically-rich and well-preserved architecture to appeal to guests from all over the world, and is perfect for guests looking for tranquillity and relaxation while being transported back in time to the Meiji era of Japanese history.
At the epic center of the ryokan lies an alluring Japanese garden filled with flourishing greenery and abundant of nature such as birds making their homes at one of the strong sky scraping tree. A vintage karaoke and bar with it’s original stained glass windows is located on the 2nd floor, reserved for guests to enjoy some ice cold beer or Japanese whisky on the rocks while belting out their favourite songs in utter abandonment.
At Fuzukumiro, each of the rooms have a unique history and story. Each room features traditional Japanese Tatami mats for sleeping and carvings of “lucky bats” in the furnishings, which is believed to bring good luck. The rooms are broadly organised by the room’s view of either the beautiful gardens or the picturesque riverside. One of the more premium rooms is Seseragi. Suitable for up to 2-3 guests, you may be fortunate enough to hear the Kajika frogs singing along the riverside between late April and early July.
For the best views, the hotel recommends Sakura #1, which is located on the 1st storey of the building and gives guests unparalled views of the gentle flowing ravine, Yusuka mountain, and the beautiful seasonal changes. Sakura #1 has it’s own seperate bedroom and living room which doubles up as the dining room as well as a porch where one can enjoy Japanese tea and sweets while admiring the outside views and therapeutic sounds of the flowing waters in the ravine. Guests in big groups or families may opt for Kiri #6, which has a large family room suitable for 4 or more guests and has 26 Tatami mats in total.
Dining in Hakone Fukuzumiro is designed to be a personalised and special experience for all guests. There are no walk-in restaurants in the property but breakfast and dinners during a guest’s stay are brought directly to their room. The menu is designed by the in-house chefs to emphasise seasonality and includes fresh seafood, local meats and vegetables. All prospective guests of the hotel can make selections on their meal courses when making their reservation.
Food here are down right traditional even to the methods of preparation and cooking, rare to find in this modern Japan era. Sashimi are wonderfully fresh and masterfully sliced, Wagyu Nabe is exceptional in taste served on a heated claypot and the Sushi made with premium rice is magnificent. All meals are served in-room by two staff, if its a lady staff she will be all dressed in a kimono and for the man in yukata. The same staff will make your beds after clearing dinner, this is a typical practice since ages past.
One of the signature elements of Hakone Fukuzumiro is the hot springs. The hot spring water is pumped constantly from the surrounding volcanic mountains and cooled also with natural spring water, which is never treated. The property features 3 types of bathtubs for enjoying the hot springs. Ohmaru-buro which is made of large pieces of pine wood, Iwa-buro which is made of rocks and a family sized bathtub. For the health benefit of their guests, Hakone Fukuzumiro has set the hot springs water at 62.9 degrees Celsius and an alkaline pH of 8.9 which they believe to be effective fatigue remedy, improving blood circulation as well as relieving nerve pains and muscle aches.
