The word Jiang is a character loosely based on the Young & Dangerous (古惑仔) Hong Kong film series. He is a rich and powerful businessman, and well respected by the Hong Kong society. Always welcoming and forever hospitable, Mr. Jiang invites you to feast in his world blurred by the black and white rules of community. No pretentious air around here, just good ole Cantonese comfort food served in tapas portions.
Choose to dine in the street level joint, where the decor mimics a traditional 1980s Cha Chann Teng (tea house). Marble furniture fills the room with dim lighting and cheesy LEDs on the walls. Alternatively experience Hong Kong street vibes in the basement settings. Loose old school foldable tables with retro chairs strewn across the floor. Old movie posters line the entire length of the walls with dim pendant lights.
The menu features a mix of Hong Kong street food and traditional Cantonese restaurant cuisine. From curry fishballs, XO carrot cake and pork floss tofu, to roast meats, sweet sour pork and curry beef brisket, plus other Asian favorites like La Zi Ji and chilli oil wontons! Beverage includes draft beers (Connor’s Stout & Jing-A craft beer), sakes, whiskies and wines at really affordable prices.
Must try is the XO Carrot Cake, made from white radish and cut into cubes. It is then wok fried till crispy with a nice char in Jiang’s homemade XO sauce that is not too spicy but abounding in rich flavours. This is an addictive dish with some bean sprouts added for good measure and texture. Sweet Sour Pork is another good pick. Done the traditional way, with vegetables such as red and green bell peppers, onions and pineapple. A true sweet sour classic!
As with all Chinese cuisine, a vegetable dish is a given. Wok Fried French Beans with Dried Shrimps is a delicious course that will even surprise diners who do not fancy that vegetable. The beans are cooked perfectly with the shrimps adding depth. King Prawn Hor Fun with Egg Gravy is the ideal way to end your meal. Large fresh prawns sits on top of this unassuming choice with the wide rice noodles swimming in a silky and eggy sauce.
