Bistro Du Vin, Singapore

Located in the heart of town, Bistro Du Vin is a French culinary creation which strives to bring authentic French cuisine to Singapore. Opened in July 2009 and recently refurbished, Bistro Du Vin has been at the forefront of traditional French, from the food to ambience, all the way to the friendly nature of service and music played throughout the restaurant.

Walking into the restaurant, you are greeted by the homely atmosphere created by the warm lights and red-painted walls. The walls are lined with paintings and memorabilia capturing your imagination, as though you have been transported into a French bistro in modern day Paris. On the wall, a large blackboard writes the day’s specials and promotions, and above it a false ceiling that holds bottles and bottles of French wines.

A most colourful entree one can order is Salade de Tomatoes, mix of extremely fresh French red, green and beet heirloom tomatoes with brocolini, snow peas, carrots and corn tossed with aged balsamic dressing and lightly drizzled over with extra virgin olive oil. The naturally sweet tomatoes is given a beautiful sheen by the dressing and created a great balance with balsamic vinegar’s acidity. Simple yet simply satisfying.

As good as a restaurant’s décor may be, the food still needs to be the focus and Bistro Du Vin does not disappoint. Chevre Chaud, warm goat cheese salad sitting on a refreshing mix of seasonal vegetables and crunchy filo pastry. Wedges of green apple and tomatoes with scattered walnuts completes yet another beautifully plated dish. The cheese was incredibly soft and creamy to cheese lovers delight.

A true test of any French restaurant or eatery for that matter is non other then Sole Meuniere. Bistro du Vin does this classic recipe in the traditional way with French coast caught whole dover sole coated in plain flour, salt and pepper lightly protecting the fish without overpowering it’s flavour during the frying using butter from Brittany for the sauce. Potatoes and carrots makes good accompaniment to the fish.

Poussin Rotis is a favourite with both young and old. The dish comprises of half French yellow spring chicken well roasted till tender and succulent covered in thyme jus and served alongside sauteed potatoes and French beans. Chef uses naturally raised chickens, not injected with antibiotics or growth hormones.

Concluding your meal should be the classic French dessert, Crème Brulee. The sugar top is torched evenly to a deep golden brown, giving it that satisfying crunch upon cracking it with your spoons. The crème underneath is sweet and balanced nicely by the bittersweet flavour of the caramelised sugar.

The wines served at Bistro Du Vin are greatly indicative of a classic French restaurant with more than sixty wines available. They are sorted not by wine varietal but by the region and vineyard, giving guests a geographical experience in choosing.
